Putting baby to bed. Blanket safety.

I heard that you cannot tuck baby in with blankets because they could get SIDS or become overheated. I am having a winter baby and putting baby to bed with no blankets seems strange to me. If this is true then why do all crib bedding sets come with a blanket?

I have had two perfectly healthy babies and used blankets on both of them. This is what i did.... I always used sleepers. If it was the winter time then i used the fleece ones and I always "bundled" my babies like a burrito..LOL. And draped a small blanket tucked in over them...No where near their face so if they got themselves loose they were able to pull it up over their faces.... Use your caution as a mother..ask yourself...Does this look safe? If so i say use your own judgement. People push so much on an issue that it scares others... Just check on the baby every once in a while and make sure all is welll. Good luck!!!

The American Pediatrics Association recommends cribs are outfitted with only a fitted sheet over a snug fitting mattress. Crib comforters, additional sheets and blankets, toys, and crib bumpers are not necessary since these additional items have been linked as a cause to SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). Since babies are unable to move around on their own, extra bedding can fall over baby?s face posing a suffocation risk. Since babies need protection from the chilly nighttime air, there are alternatives for keeping baby warm. Wearable baby items on the market today provide warmth and a safe sleeping environment as opposed to loose blankets. Heavy blanket sleepers (fleece sleep n plays), Sleep Sacks, and wearable blankets will give you more peace of mind when laying baby down to sleep. If baby only needs a crib sheet why is the extra bedding sold in crib bedding sets? Because newborns do not stay newborns for long and blankets are safe after 12 months of age.

The truth is that no one knows why SIDS happens, thus the ambiguous name. I tucked mine in w/ receiving blankets. With regard to SIDS, I think the APA are a bunch of quacks. They took out all blankets, stuffed animals, bumpers, toys, etc. and given many children flat-head syndrome (http://www.babycenter.com/0_plagiocephaly-flat-head-syndrome_1187986.bc). All of these things to now claim only moderate success. If you took all of the food away from a morbidly obese person, they'll lose weight, too! Good luck!

I used the miracle blanket which is like a wearable swaddling blanket that will not unravel while you or baby is sleeping, underneath it I dressed him in a onesie so he wouldn't get overheated. If the baby is sleeping in another room, I think on babiesrus they sell this egg shaped room thermometer that tells you what the temp in the room is, if its already in the warm temp zone, the baby may not need to sleep with anything.

I received a "sleep sack" from the hospital my son was born at. A good option I think if you have concerns of using a blanket. Here, check it out--> https://www.halosleep.com/ This is just one company that makes them. I'm sure there are alternatives
